TWIN4DEM is an innovative European research project dedicated to strengthening democratic resilience through cutting-edge Computational Social Science (CSS) and digital twin technology. By combining expertise from diverse fields – social sciences, humanities, and advanced computational methods – TWIN4DEM aims to uncover the pathways behind democratic backsliding and provide actionable solutions to policymakers, civil society, and technology providers.

Mission

TWIN4DEM’s mission is to strengthen democratic resilience in Europe by leveraging advanced Computational Social Science (CSS) and digital twin technologies. Through cutting-edge research and stakeholder collaboration, the project aims to identify, simulate, and explain the factors driving democratic backsliding, ensuring robust and transparent governance for future generations.

Goals

  1. Innovative Modeling: Develop agent-based conceptual models to analyze the causes of democratic backsliding, focusing on executive aggrandizement and threats to rule-of-law institutions.
  2. Cross-Cutting Tools: Create GDPR-compliant, open, and FAIR tools to process and analyze vast amounts of political and social data in real-time.
  3. Policy Simulation: Collaborate with policymakers and civil society to test and implement policy scenarios to uncover and mitigate threats to democracy.
  4. Participatory Research: Engage citizens, scholars, and stakeholders through ethical, participatory approaches to strengthen democratic processes and empower communities.
  5. Knowledge Sharing: Disseminate findings and tools widely through publications, training programs, and an active open-source community to ensure long-term impact and sustainability.
